Abstract
DEPENDENCY IS DEFINED AS RELYING ON OR BEING SUBJECT TO SOMETHING ELSE FOR SUPPORT AND BEING UNABLE TO SUSTAIN ONESELF WITHOUT THE WILL, POWER, OR AID OF SOMETHING OR SOMEONE ELSE. A TYPOLOGY CLASSIFIES DEPENDENCY RELATIVE TO THE MAJOR TYPE OF ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULUS IN THE PARTICULAR SETTING WHICH TRIGGERS IT OFF, AND SUGGESTS FIVE CATEGORIES - SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, FINANCIAL, INSTITUTIONAL AND PSYCHOMEDICAL. THE SUBJECT OF DEPENDENCY IS PRESENTED UNDER THE HEADINGS OF THEORIES AND CONCEPTS OF DEPENDENCY, BEHAVIORAL MANIFESTATIONS OF DEPENDENCY, DEPENDENCY RESEARCH, FIELD DEPENDENCY (A PERCEPTUAL APPROACH) AND REHABILITATION OF THE DEPENDENT CLIENT. STUDIES BY VARIOUS STUDENTS OF DEPENDENCY AND PRACTITIONERS IN REHABILITATION ARE SUMMARIZED AND COMPARED. A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE WORKS REFERRED TO IN THE TEXT IS PROVIDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
