The General Accounting Office (GAO) states that not all of the Bureau of Prison's positions need to be classified as sensitive and calls upon the Bureau to streamline the investigative process for positions that need to be so classified.
Abstract
In 1980, the Bureau spent approximately $1.5 million for 1,308 full field investigations. Only those duties directly concerned with the enforcement of laws or the protection of individuals or property, or those involving legal and fiduciary duties or public contact could be so classified. In addition, investigations on employees in sensitive positions should be conducted more efficiently. The department should either use an expedited version of the full field investigation, allow the Bureau to use its own investigation system, or request full field investigation only if the Bureau's investigation provides some indication of a problem. Finally, site vistis to the agencies requesting full field investigations are not essential to the screening process. A letter is appended.
