EVALUATION OF THE FIRST NINE MONTHS OF OPERATION, INCLUDING A PROJECT SUMMARY, PARTICIPANT CHARACTERISTICS, OPERATIONAL RESULTS, AND RECIDIVISM RESULTS.
Abstract
PROJECT NEW PRIDE IS A COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAM DESIGNED TO REDUCE THE RECIDIVISM RATE OF 60 JUVENILE PROBATIONERS WITH A RECORD OF TWO OR MORE CONVICTIONS FOR SERIOUS OFFENSES. TUTORIAL EDUCATION, VOCATIONAL TRAINING, AND PART-TIME JOB PLACEMENTS ARE ALL PROVIDED BY THE PROJECT. THE OBJECTIVES WERE TO REDUCE RECIDIVISM BY 40 PERCENT IN THIS GROUP AND TO FACILITATE THEIR REINTEGRATION INTO HOME AND COMMUNITY. THE CLIENTS RACE, AGE, HOMELIFE, PARENTAL EMPLOYMENT, SCHOOL STATUS, AND FORMER CRIMINAL RECORD ARE ALL REPORTED. THE PROJECT MET THEIR GOAL FOR ENROLLMENT. TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT STATUS FOR THE PARTICIPANTS WAS ALSO SATISFACTORY. EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT WAS MEASURED BY THE 'WIDE RANGE ACHIEVEMENT TEST' ADMINISTERED BEFORE AND AFTER TUTORING. FOR THOSE ALREADY RETESTED, SIGNIFICANT GAINS WERE MADE. EMPLOYER SATISFACTION AND PARTICIPANT MORALE WERE MEASURED BY QUESTIONNAIRE, AND WERE FOUND TO BE POSITIVE. RECIDIVISM RATES FOR THE GROUP WERE COMPARED TO BASELINE DATA FOR JUVENILE DELINQUENTS WITH SIMILAR BACKGROUNDS, AND WERE FOUND TO BE LOWER THAN EXPECTED.
