STUDY WHICH TESTED THE HYPOTHESIS THAT DELINQUENTS WILL SHOW GREATER UNCONSCIOUS FEMININITY THAN NONDELINQUENTS, AND THAT DELINQUENTS WILL SHOW GREATER CONSCIOUS MASCULINITY THAN NONDELINQUENTS.
Abstract
IT WAS ALSO HYPOTHESIZED THAT THE MORE DELINQUENT THE ADOLESCENT, THE GREATER WILL BE THE DEGREE OF UNCONSCIOUS FEMININITY AND CONSCIOUS MASCULINITY. SIXTH SUBJECTS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 14 AND 16 WERE DIVIDED INTO THREE GROUPS FOR THIS STUDY - NONDELINQUENT BOYS ATTENDING A LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL, BOYS ADJUDICATED DELINQUENT AND ON PROBATION, AND ADJUDICATED DELINQUENTS CONFINED TO A CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION. MEASURES OF UNCONSCIOUS AND CONSCIOUS FEMININITY WERE OBTAINED BY THE USE OF THE FRANCK DRAWING COMPLETION TEST AND THE GOUGH FEMININITY SCALE. ON THE BASIS OF COMBINED TEST SCORES, SUBJECTS WERE CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO SEX-ROLE PROFILES. THE HYPOTHESIS THAT THE DELINQUENT SUBJECTS WOULD EVIDENCE MORE UNCONSCIOUS FEMININITY AND CONSCIOUS MASCULINITY THAN THE NONDELINQUENTS WAS SUPPORTED BY THE DATA. THE HYPOTHESIS THAT THE MORE SEVERE THE DELINQUENCY, THE GREATER WOULD BE THE DEGREE OF UNCONSCIOUS FEMININITY AND CONSCIOUS MASCULINITY, WAS NOT SUPPORTED BY THE DATA. COPIES OF THE TWO TESTS USED IN THE STUDY, THE RESEARCH SCHEDULE, AND SCORING INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE FRANCK DRAWING COMPLETION TEST ARE INCLUDED IN THE APPENDIX. A TEN-PAGE BIBLIOGRAPHY IS ALSO INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
