Connections between extra sex chromosomes, in this case the Klinefelter syndrome, and delinquency are explored in one case study.
Abstract
The 63-year-old male offender studied suffers from a triple mosaic Klinefelter syndrome (46,XY/47,XXY/48,XXXY). His criminal record results from various antigovernmental actions. Twins predominate in the matermal line of his family, and the subject's mosaic karyotype is apparently the result of polyovulation and simultaneous fertilization and development of separate ova. Contrary to findings in other cases with extra sex chromosomes, the subject exhibits normal intelligence. Otherwise, the characteristics of this individual are similar to those mentioned elsewhere in literature: schizoid and paranoid tendencies, psychological problems during puberty, feelings of persecution, and exhibitionism. The subject's imprisonment in younger years is attributable to behavior resulting from these characteristics. While 47, XYY-individuals are physically normal and fertile with a strong tendency toward psychopathological aggression, Klinefelter cases are almost always infertile. The subject in question produced children, probably because of the particular mosaic elements involved, but he has exceptionally small genitals. A 40-item bibliography is supplied. -- in French.
