FACTORS CAUSING RECIDIVISM OF JUVENILES AND INFLUENCING THE RESULTS OF TREATMENT PROGRAMS FOR JUVENILES ARE EXAMINED, WITH A VIEW TO ESTABLISHING RECIDIVISM PREDICTION AND PREDICTION OF TREATMENT RESULTS.
Abstract
THIS STUDY EXAMINES RECIDIVISM FACTORS AND THOSE FACTORS INFLUENCING THE RESULTS OF TREATMENT PROGRAMS. THE SUBJECTS STUDIED WERE 876 JUVENILES DISCHARGED FROM CLASSIFICATION HOMES DURING FEBURARY AND MARCH 1969; TRAFFIC OFFENDERS WERE EXCLUDED. DATA ANALYZED INCLUDED CRIMINAL RECORDS, LIFE HISTORY, PARENTAL PROTECTION, SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT, AND PERSONALITY TRAITS. PAST TREATMENT RECORDS WERE STUDIED FOR THOSE WHO HAD BEEN PLACED UNDER PAROLE SUPERVISION OR COMMITTED TO TRAINING SCHOOLS. RECORDS OF APPREHENSION DUE TO RECIDIVISM WERE ALSO EXAMINED. THREE ANALYSIS METHODS WERE EMPLOYED: (1) A QUANTIFIED SYSTEM BY REGRESSION OBTAINED FROM VARIMAX CRITERION; (2) A POINT METHOD BASED ON DISCRIMINANT ANALYSIS; AND (3) A PREDICTIVE ATTRIBUTE ANALYSIS. FACTORS AFFECTING THE RESULTS OF TREATMENT PROGRAMS WERE STUDIED USING THE FOLLOWING DATA ITEMS: OVERALL TREATMENT RECORDS, ATTITUDE TOWARD AUTHORITY, RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS, ATTITUDE TOWARD OWN LIFE, AND ATTITUDE TOWARD ONESELF. VIOLATIONS OF PAROLE AND TRAINING SCHOOL RULES WERE ALSO CONSIDERED. FACTORS CAUSING RECIDIVISM AND AFFECTING TREATMENT EFFECTIVENESS WERE ANALYZED FOR SIX SUBGROUPS OF THE JUVENILES STUDIED, ACCORDING TO TYPE OF COURT DISPOSITION. FOR JUVENILES ON PROBATIONARY SUPERVISION, CRIMINAL RECORDS WERE OBSERVED AS IMPORTANT FACTORS FOR PREDICTING BOTH RECIDIVISM AND THE EFFECT OF TREATMENT. THE ATTITUDE TOWARD PAST JOB EXPERIENCE, ALTHOUGH CLOSELY RELATED TO THE EFFECT OF TREATMENT, WAS FOUND TO BE LESS CONNECTED WITH RECIDIVISM. IN THIS SAME SUBGROUP, PERSONALITY AND ADAPTABILITY, WHICH WERE CLOSELY RELATED TO RECIDIVISM, HAD NO IMPORTANT EFFECT ON TREATMENT RESULTS. FOR JUVENILES COMMITTED TO TRAINING SCHOOLS, CRIMINAL RECORDS AND PAST JOB EXPERIENCE WERE CLOSELY RELATED TO RECIDIVISM, BUT WERE NOT RELATED TO TREATMENT EFFECT. IN THIS SAME GROUP, HABITS OF DRINKING AND SMOKING WERE IMPORTANT FACTORS FOR PREDICTION OF TREATMENT RESULTS, BUT HAD LITTLE EFFECT ON RECIDIVISM. TABULAR DATA ARE INCLUDED. (RCB)
