This article looks at the importance of dependency as a factor in predisposing elders to abuse.
Abstract
Previous research into the role of dependency in predisposing the elderly to mistreatment suggests differing and inconsistent findings. This study seeks to review the research in hopes of clarifying the importance of dependence as a risk factor. It focuses to some extent on two studies that reached seemingly inconsistent conclusions. The author suggests the need for more standardized definitions of dependency and study methodologies in order to better understand the relationship between dependency and abuse or neglect. The issue is analyzed from four additional perspectives. These include a research perspective, a nursing perspective, a social work perspective and a policy perspective.
