Three chapters discuss the empirical findings of the present study. One chapter focuses on trends in the number and rates of felonious killings by agency type and size and attempts to explain differences in agencies. The report includes an analysis of all incidents in which police officers were killed in the United States and its territories between 1983 and 1992, highlighting the context and circumstances of the incidents, as well as the actions of officers and their assailants. Finally, the report contains results of an agency survey regarding policies, practices, and the effectiveness of police wearing soft body armor. 239 tables, 7 figures, 101 references, and 3 appendixes
