This article discusses the growing phenomenon of teenagers carrying guns to school.
Abstract
The article uses the example of Jefferson High School in Brooklyn as an example of a school where most of the children either carry guns or could obtain one easily. In the spring of 1991, there was a double murder committed at Jefferson High School by a student who owned a .38-caliber revolver; another student committed suicide later that day as a result of the incident. The violence illustrates that schools can no longer provide a safe haven to children from poor or dangerous neighborhoods. To fight the violence, many school have instituted security measures, including metal detectors, but these efforts fail to address the real problem of drugs, gangs, and violent crime among American youth.
