Data-based instruction as a form of applied behavior analysis is presented as an alternative to traditional teaching and assessment strategies in education. Four instructional programs and one management strategy developed by correctional educators are described.
Abstract
Data-based instruction is characterized by direct measurement systems; continuous data collection, single-element teaching procedures; consistency; and ease of data analysis. It is particularly appropriate for use in correction facilities because of the unsuitable learning environmental conditions resulting from frequent and unpredictable movement of inmates between institutions. This form of instruction allows students to chart their progress in development of academic and social skills and to become actively responsible for it. Examples of data-based instruction are provided for the Maryland Correctional Institution in Jessup Patuxent Institution, and Baltimore City Correctional Center. These examples suggest that data-based instruction can easily be implemented in the correctional setting and can impact positively on student performance. 5 figures, 18 references (Author abstract modified)
