This videotape and accompanying teacher’s manual aim to introduce students in grades five through eight to facts about inhalants, how sniffing and huffing can cause permanent injury or even death, that these substances’ presence in common household products does not mean that they are safe, and how to avoid their use.
Abstract
The videotape presents scenes depicting youth considering whether or not to use inhalants. The discussion notes that workers who use dangerous poisons use protective gear, whereas inhaling these substances from household products is dangerous. It also notes effects such as memory problems, headaches, blindness, and burns, and presents the comments of the mother, grandmother, and brother of a youth who died the first time he used an inhalant. The videotape also presents a three-step process to just say no, starting with identifying a hot situation in which inhalant use is likely to be present, making a statement, and leaving the situation. The teacher’s guide emphasizes that videos support and enhance prevention education programs, should not be used without other instruction and exercises, and needs thoughtful introduction and follow-up. The manual also presents a teacher lesson plan, learning objectives, a student video review worksheet, classroom activities, student projects, and parent guidelines. Resource list
