THIS INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE, PART OF A LAW EDUCATION PROGRAM DEVELOPED FOR THE DADE COUNTY, FLA., PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PRESENTS THE GOALS, CONTENT, AND STUDENT EXERCISES FOR A HIGH SCHOOL COURSE INVOLVING A FIELD RESEARCH PROJECT.
Abstract
THE COURSE IS FOR 11TH AND 12TH GRADERS WHO HAVE COMPLETED A PREVIOUS COURSE IN THE SAME LAW EDUCATION PROGRAM. STUDENTS ARE SELECTED FOR THEIR INTEREST, ABILITY, AND MATURITY LEVELS ADEQUATE TO CONDUCT RESEARCH IN THE COMMUNITY. COURSE GOALS ARE TO REVIEW CONCEPTS OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAW AND TO PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR COMMUNITY BASED INVESTIGATION OF A LEGAL PROBLEM AS WELL AS EXPOSURE TO POTENTIAL LAW-RELATED CAREERS. EACH STUDENT PLANS, CONDUCTS, AND REPORTS TO THE CLASS ON A COMMUNITY BASED RESEARCH PROJECT. PROJECT TOPICS MAY RELATE TO EITHER CRIMINAL OR CONSUMER LAW. TO CONDUCT THE RESEARCH, STUDENTS MAY BECOME INVOLVED IN SERVICE, ACTION, OR OBSERVATION OF A COMMUNITY AGENCY OR PROGRAM. STUDENTS UNABLE TO DO FIELD RESEARCH MAY CONDUCT A SCHOOL BASED RESEARCH PROJECT. EACH STUDENT MAINTAINS A WEEKLY LOG OF PROJECT PROGRESS. SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND RECOMMENDED STUDENT ACTIVITIES TO ACHIEVE THEM ARE DESCRIBED. APPENDED MATERIALS INCLUDE ADDITIONAL STATEMENTS OF LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND SUBOBJECTIVES AND A COPY OF THE STUDENT SOURCEBOOK. THE COURSE IS PART OF A PROGRAM DEVELOPED BY THE LAW EDUCATION GOALS AND LEARNINGS (LEGAL) PROJECT OPERATED BY THE DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD. THE PROJECT WAS FUNDED UNDER TITLE IV OF THE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT. PROJECT GOAL IS TO DEVELOP STUDENT UNDERSTANDING AND SKILLS RELATED TO THE CRIMINAL AND CIVIL (CONSUMER) JUSTICE SYSTEMS.
