ORGANIZATIONAL PATTERNS AND PROBLEMS OF JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS, PARTICULARLY THOSE ENCOUNTERED IN CONVERTING FROM A CUSTODIAL TO A TREATMENT APPROACH.
Abstract
A COMPARATIVE STUDY WAS MADE OF SEVERAL INSTITUTIONS FOR MALE JUVENILE OFFENDERS. THE INSTITUTIONS STUDIED DIFFERED IN THEIR GOALS WHICH RANGED FROM STRONGLY CUSTODIAL TO STRONGLY TREATMENT ORIENTED IN NATURE. THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY ARE DISCUSSED WITH RESPECT TO THE EFFECTS OF THE GOALS OF THE INSTITUTION UPON SUCH FACTORS AS DEPARTMENTAL STRUCTURE, BALANCE OF POWER WITHIN THE STAFF, LEVEL AND PATTERNS OF CONFLICT AMONG PERSONNEL, STAFF INMATE RELATIONS, AND INMATE RESPONSES TO THE INSTITUTIONS.
