RESEARCH ON JUVENILE DEVIANCE IN LOCATIONS WITH SIMILAR GEOGRAPHIC, DEMOGRAPHIC, ECONOMIC, AND SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS, FROM 1966-1967.
Abstract
IN ADDITION TO STUDYING SOCIOLOGICAL, ECONOMIC, AND DEMOGRAPHIC SIMILARITIES AND DISSIMILARITIES, THE ARTICLE EXPLAINS LEGAL DEFINITIONS, JURISDICTION, AGE CATEGORIES, DIFFERENTIAL DETECTION AND PROSECUTION, SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS AND DEVIANCE, AND THE NUMBER AND DISTRIBUTION OF OFFENSES. THE FINDINGS INDICATE THAT THE OCCURANCE OF FORCIBLE RAPE, FORCIBLE THEFT, AND PERSONAL ASSAULT IS HIGHER IN ROSARIO THAN IN TOLEDO. MURDER AND MANSLAUGHTER WERE RARE IN BOTH CITIES. TOLEDO EXPERIENCED A GREATER NUMBER OF AUTO THEFTS, AND ABUSE OF DRUGS AND ALCOHOL. NON-FORCIBLE THEFTS, FORCIBLE THEFTS, AND VANDALISM WERE DOMINANT IN BOTH CITIES, BUT WERE NOT EXPLAINABLE IN TERMS OF THE SAME PHYSICAL OPPORTUNITIES OR SOCIOCULTURAL LIFE-STYLES. ALSO, IN ARGENTINA, MORE OFFENSES INVOLVED VIOLENCE TO EITHER PERSONS OR PROPERTY. THE AUTHORS CONCLUDE THAT BETWEEN ROSARIO AND TOLEDO THERE EXISTS A DIFFERENTIAL OPPORTUNITY STRUCTURE, WHICH MIGHT BE TERMED DIFFERENTIAL PHYSICAL OPPORTUNITY, OR ENVIRONMENTAL OPPORTUNITY THEORY.
