This bulletin presents guidelines for jail officers regarding prevention and management of critical incidents in jail settings.
Abstract
It defines the critical incident and provides examples of five types that can occur in a correctional setting. The importance of prevention and preparation in the management of critical incidents is explained in reference to development of sound policies, procedures, and emergency response training. Three important rules in management are response, recovery, and review. Effective communication, with inmates, civilian visitors, and the media; assessment of the emotional status of jail staff members; and review of the incident is required. Symptoms of physical stress and trauma in the corrections staff during and after the incident are listed. The bulletin emphasizes the need for accurate documentation of all facts and information surrounding the incident as well as follow-up phases of the incident, including results of review, investigation, and critiques of the situation.
