CRISIS INTERVENTION IS EXAMINED AS A MODEL TO BE APPLIED BY POLICE OFFICERS BECAUSE OF ITS SURVIVAL VALUE TO OFFICERS AND ITS HUMANISTIC APPROACH TO RESOLVING DISPUTES.
Abstract
CRISIS INTERVENTION IS ESSENTIALLY A COMBINATION OF METHODS AND PROCEDURES THAT POLICE OFFICERS EMPLOY ON THE STREET WHEN ATTEMPTING TO QUELL DISTURBANCE CALLS. THE INNOVATIVE ASPECT OF CRISIS INTERVENTION REVOLVES AROUND SPECIFIC PROCEDURES FOR DECREASING THE POSSIBILITY OF INDIVIDUALS RETURNING TO THE SAME SCENE AND REINVOLVING THE POLICE. A CRISIS IS A PERIOD OF DISEQUILIBRIUM THAT RESULTS WHEN INDIVIDUALS ARE CONFRONTED WITH A PROBLEM THAT CANNOT BE SOLVED BY THEIR NORMAL RANGE OF PROBLEM SOLVING MECHANISMS. AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES WERE AGE RELATED. FORTY-EIGHT SUCH AS A POLICE OFFICER RESPONDING TO A DISTURBANCE CALL TO HANDLE A CRISIS SITUATION PROPERLY ARE: HELP THE INDIVIDUAL TO FACE THE CRISIS, ASSIST THE INDIVIDUAL IN FACING THE CRISIS IN MANAGEABLE DOSES, AID IN FACT FINDING, AVOID FALSE REASSURANCE, DISCOURAGE PROJECTION, HELP THE INDIVIDUAL TO ACCEPT ASSISTANCE, AND AID WITH DAILY TASKS. THE BASIS OF CRISIS INTERVENTION THEORY IS THE MEANS BY WHICH A MEDIATOR IS ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH A DISPUTANT. GUIDELINES FOR FORMULATING EMPATHIC RESPONSES ARE OUTLINED, AND STEPS IN THE BARD CRISIS INTERVENTION MODEL FOR POLICE OFFICER TRAINING ARE ENUMERATED. THE IMPORTANCE OF ROLE PERCEPTIONS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AND CRISIS INTERVENTION TRAINING ARE EMPHASIZED. A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS INCLUDED. (DEP)
