A CURRICULUM FOR A 20-HOUR POLICE TRAINING PROGRAM IN CRISIS IDENTIFICATION AND MANAGEMENT IS PRESENTED IN A MANUAL FOR INSTRUCTORS.
Abstract
THE CURRICULUM IS DIVIDED INTO AN INTRODUCTION AND FOUR UNITS: VICTIMOLOGY; CRISIS IDENTIFICATION (EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL, AND SITUATIONAL SYMPTOMS OF PEOPLE IN CRISIS); CRISIS MANAGEMENT (VICTIMS, PERSONS IN CONFLICT); AND COPING WITH CULTURAL DIFFERENCES. THE CRISIS MANAGEMENT UNIT INCLUDES ROLE-PLAY EXERCISES. MEETING WITH COMMUNITY GROUP REPRESENTATIVES IS DISCUSSED IN THE UNIT ON CULTURAL DIFFERENCES. EACH UNIT CONTAINS THREE SECTIONS--WHY, WHAT, AND HOW. THE WHY SECTIONS EXPLAIN WHY THE UNIT IS RELEVANT TO THE OFFICER. THE WHAT SECTIONS PRESENT THE CONTENT OF THE UNIT AS IT RELATES TO LEARNING GOALS AND BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES. THE LEARNING GOALS SPECIFY WHAT THE TRAINEES SHOULD ACHIEVE FOR EACH SEGMENT OF THE UNIT. BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES, WHICH DESCRIBE THE ACTIONS OR BEHAVIORS THE TRAINEES SHOULD EXHIBIT AFTER INSTRUCTION, MAY BE USED TO EVALUATE THE TRAINING. THE HOW SECTIONS SUGGEST TEACHING APPROACHES (ADVANCE PREPARATION, HANDOUTS, AUDIOVISUAL AIDS, LECTURE AND DISCUSSION TECHNIQUES, ROLE-PLAY SITUATIONS). TRAINERS ARE URGED TO READ THE ENTIRE CURRICULUM AND THEN ADAPT THE TRAINING PROGRAM TO MEET THEIR NEEDS, CONSTRAINTS, AND RESOURCES. (LKM)
