OVERVIEW OF THE PRINCIPLES OF PSYCHIATRY, PSYCHOTHERAPY, PSYCHOLOGY, SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, AND SOCIOLOGY, AND OF THEIR USE IN THE EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR.
Abstract
PART ONE OF THE TEXT OUTLINES BASIC THEORIES, CONCEPTS, AND SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT IN THE ABOVE FIELDS, USING COPIOUS REFERENCES AND QUOTATIONS. SOME OF THE SUBJECTS COVERED ARE PSYCHOSES, SYNDROMES OF ORGANIC MENTAL ILLNESS, FEEBLEMINDEDNESS, PSYCHOPATHY, LEARNING THEORY, DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY, THE BIOLOGICAL BASIS OF CRIMINAL PERSONALITY TYPES, AND THE THEORIES OF FREUD, JUNG, AND ADLER. SOCIOLOGICAL CONCEPTS DISCUSSED INCLUDE GROUP, ROLE, STATUS, AND ABNORMALITY. PART TWO SUMMARIZES THE RESULTS OF ATTEMPTS TO APPLY THESE THEORIES AND CONCEPTS TO THE STUDY OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR. INCLUDED ARE STUDIES OF THE NATURE AND INCIDENCE OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR BY PSYCHOTICS, PSYCHOPATHS, AND THE FEEBLEMINDED. STATISTICAL FINDINGS IN THESE FIELDS ARE COMPARED, AND SPECIAL ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE WIDE DIVERGENCE DISPLAYED BY THE FINDINGS ON THE FEEBLEMINDED. THE SECTION ON PSYCHOPATHS INCLUDES A TYPOLOGY OF OFFENDERS AND OFFENSES. THE SECTION ON PSYCHOTHERAPY PRESENTS CASE HISTORIES AND THEIR ANALYSIS AS WORKED OUT BY ADOLF AICHHORN, HANS ZULLIGER, AND KATE FRIEDLANDER. THE SECTION ON THE BIOLOGICAL BASIS OF CRIMINAL PERSONALITIES PROVIDES TYPOLOGIES, AND THE SECTION ON TWIN RESEARCH COMPARES FINDINGS ON THE INCIDENCE AND NATURE OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR BY TWINS. THE SUMMARY OF SOCIOLOGICAL STUDIES OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR REVIEWS FINDINGS ON FAMILY ENVIRONMENT, MEMBERSHIP IN JUVENILE GANGS, AND OCCUPATION AND SOCIAL ORIGIN OF OFFENDERS, WITH TABLES COMPARING THE DATA ON FAMILY SITUATIONS. A SECTION IS ALSO DEVOTED TO THE MULTIFACTOR ANALYSIS OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY. A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS INCLUDED. A LATER VOLUME WILL TREAT OTHER CRIME CAUSE THEORIES. --IN GERMAN
