ASPECTS AND PROBLEMS OF CONTEMPORARY CRIMINOLOGY WITH SPECIAL RELEVANCE TO PANAMA AND LATIN AMERICA, BUT ALSO PLACED IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT, WERE DISCUSSED AT A CRIMINOLOGY SEMINAR HELD IN PANAMA IN 1975.
Abstract
SPONSORED BY THE CRIMINOLOGY INSTITUTE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PANAMA AND THE PANAMANIAN BAR ASSOCIATION, THE FIRST NATIONAL SEMINAR ON CRIMINOLOGY DEALT WITH A WIDE-RANGING AGENDA OF PROBLEMS AND STUDIES IN CONTEMPORARY PROBLEMS OF CRIMINOLOGY AND PENOLOGY. THE STATED OBJECTIVE WAS TO PURSUE AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION FOCUSED PRIMARILY ON CRIME PATTERNS IN PANAMA. THE CRIMINAL PERSONALITY AS A SOCIAL PHENOMENON MUST BE UNDERSTOOD TO HELP IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW CRIMINAL POLICY. PAPERS DEAL WITH SUCH TOPICS AS CONTEMPORARY CRIMINOLOGICAL PROBLEMS (JUVENILE DELINQUENCY, CRIMINALITY AND AUTOMOBILES, MACROCRIMINALITY, DRUG ADDICTS, VIOLENCE, VICTIMOLOGY); THE DRUG PROBLEM IN COUNTRIES OTHER THAN PANAMA; AND MALE JUVENILES WHO HAVE APPEARED REPEATEDLY IN JUVENILE COURTS. OTHER SUBJECTS COVERED ARE FEMALE PARTICIPATION IN THE TOTAL CRIME INCIDENCE IN PANAMA, CROWDING AND CRIME IN PANAMA CITY, PENALTIES INVOLVING LOSS OF PERSONAL FREEDOM AND PREVENTIVE DETENTION IN THE PANAMANIAN LEGISLATION, AND PRACTICAL PLANNING FOR REFORMING THE PANAMANIAN CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM.
