THIS NATIONAL CRIME PANEL REPORT GIVES THE RESULTS OF REPRESENTATIVE SURVEYS OF APPROXIMATELY 65,000 HOUSEHOLDS AND 15,000 PLACES OF BUSINESS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES.
Abstract
RESPONDENTS WERE INTERVIEWED TWICE DURING THE COURSE OF THE APPROPRIATE DATA COLLECTION PERIOD, AT SIX MONTH INTERVALS, CONCERNING THE FOLLOWING CRIMES - FOR INDIVIDUALS: RAPE, ROBBERY, ASSAULT, AND PERSONAL LARCENY; FOR HOUSEHOLDS: BURGLARY, HOUSEHOLD LARCENY, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT; AND FOR COMMERICAL ESTABLISHMENTS: BURGLARY AND ROBBERY. INFORMATION FROM 100 STATISTICAL TABLES IS DESCRIPTIVELY ANALYZED IN DETAIL, AND A SPECIAL SECTION HIGHLIGHTS SALIENT FINDINGS. MAJOR TOPICAL AREAS COVERED INCLUDE VICTIM CHARACTERISTICS; VICTIMIZATION OF CENTRAL CITY, SUBURBAN, AND NON-METROPOLITAN RESIDENTS; THE VICTIM-OFFENDER RELATIONSHIP; CRIME CHARACTERISTICS; CHARACTERISTICS OF OFFENDERS; AND REPORTING OF CRIMES TO THE POLICE. APPENDIXES CONTAIN DATA TABLES, FACSIMILES OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE FORMS USED IN CONDUCTING THE HOUSEHOLD AND COMMERCIAL SURVEYS, STANDARD ERROR TABLES AND GUIDELINES FOR THEIR USE, AS WELL AS TECHNICAL INFORMATION CONCERNING SAMPLE DESIGN AND ESTIMATION PROCEDURES.
