This report provides supplemental statistical tables to Criminal Victimization, 2020, which was published in October 2021 as the 48th report in a series that began in 1973. The supplement presents official estimates of criminal victimizations reported and not reported to police from BJS’s National Crime Victimization Survey. It includes statistics on nonfatal violent (rape or sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault) and property crimes (burglary or trespassing, motor vehicle theft, and other types of household theft). This report is the first release of the 2020 violent and property crime prevalence estimates and includes additional 2020 victimization and incident estimates that were not included in the Criminal Victimization, 2020 report.
Highlights:
- The percentage of persons age 12 or older who were victims of violent crime declined 15%, from 1.10% (3.1 million) in 2019 to 0.93% (2.6 million) in 2020.
- The prevalence of property crime declined from 7.37% (9.8 million) of households in 2016 to 6.19% (7.9 million) in 2020.
- Regardless of the victims’ sex, a greater percentage of violent incidents involved male offenders (79%) than female offenders (17%) or offenders of both sexes (3%).
- Most violent incidents against white (69%) and black (66%) victims were committed by an offender of the same race or ethnicity as the victim.
