COMPARISON OF TWO SAMPLES OF ADULT MARIJUANA ARRESTEES, ASSESSING DIFFERENCES IN THE CHARACTER OF THEIR PRIOR CRIMINAL RECORD BASED ON THE STATE OF ORIGIN OF THAT RECORD.
Abstract
PRIOR CONVICTION COMPARISONS PRODUCED STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES FOR EACH OF THE PRIOR CONVICTION CATEGORIES EXAMINED, CRIME AGAINST PERSON, PROPERTY, DRUG RELATED CRIME AND THE MISCELLANEOUS CONVICTION CATEGORY; IN ALL INSTANCES THE ILLINOIS SAMPLE WAS LESS INVOLVED CRIMINALLY THAN THE CALIFORNIA SAMPLE. THE RESEARCHERS SPECULATE THAT ERRATIC LAW ENFORCEMENT AND SENTENCING PATTERNS, INFLUENCE PARTLY BY POLARIZED PUBLIC VIEWS TOWARD MARIJUANA CONSUMPTION, ARE LARGELY THE CAUSE OF THESE DIFFERENCES.
