This is a summary of proceedings of a regional workshop on criminal law and its administration in international environmental conventions.
Abstract
The workshop heard from 11 Pacific Island countries on the existing legal framework for environmental protection and its functioning, the nature and level of enforcement activities applied in the areas of interest, as well as case studies on specific relevant incidents. Workshop sessions dealt with recent developments in the activities of the UN and international treaties and conventions, regional co-operation in enforcement of environmental conventions, legislation in the Pacific and examples of tools and resources for training and investigation. Participants staged two mock trials dealing with cases of dumping hazardous waste and with catching endangered species. The article includes 17 recommendations forwarded by the workshop on its conclusion.
