This document describes Sweden's population, its criminal justice system, criminal procedures, plans for reform of the criminal justice system, and crime statistics.
Abstract
Individual sections provide a history and overview of the Swedish Criminal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure, a discussion of procedures for juvenile offenders, the laws covering the organization of each part of the criminal justice system, and the basic principles of criminal law and procedure. Additional sections describe crime detection and criminal investigations, arrest and apprehension, pretrial procedures, rights of the accused, and the role of the victim. Further sections explain sentencing and the range of sanctions, the use of conditional sentences and probation, the organization and programs of the prison system, and aftercare of prisoners. Of the 360,000 offenders found guilty of criminal offenses in 1992, 303,343 received fines, 15,832 were imprisoned, 12,839 received conditional sentences, 6,322 received probation, and 4,845 received other sanctions. Tables and appended list of the sections in the Swedish penal code.
