THIS REVIEW OF THE STEPS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS CONCENTRATES ON THE POLICE, THE COURTS, AND CORRECTIONS, AND THE PERSONNEL WORKING IN EACH OF THESE AGENCIES FOR JUSTICE.
Abstract
THE REVIEW REITERATES THE GOAL COMMON TO ALL WHO MAKE UP THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS, THE REDUCTION OF CRIME IN THE COMMUNITY, AND CONSIDERS HOW THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IS BUILT AROUND THIS GOAL. LAWS, PROCEDURES SUCH AS ARREST, BOOKING, AND ARRAIGNMENT, AND THE ALTERNATIVES AVAILABLE IN SENTENCING AND CORRECTIONS ARE EXPLAINED. THE ROLE AND FUNCTIONING OF THE POLICE WITHIN THE ENTIRE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS ARE THEN DESCRIBED. POLICE ORGANIZATIONS, CRIME SCENE RESPONSIBILITIES, THE CHAIN OF COMMAND AND AGENCY DIVISIONS ARE DISCUSSED. NEXT, THE COURTS ARE CONSIDERED WITH EMPHASIS ON JUDICIAL SELECTION, PROSECUTORS, THE JURY TRIAL, AND SUCH OTHER COURT PERSONNEL AS COURT REPORTERS, COURT CLERKS, AND COURT BAILIFFS. FINALLY, THE CORRECTIONAL OFFICER'S ROLE IN THE PROCESS IS DETERMINED, ALONG WITH THE FUNCTIONS OF THE PAROLE AND PROBATION OFFICERS. THROUGHOUT, ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE ISSUE OF WHETHER OR NOT THIS SYSTEM, TRULY ENSURES JUSTICE. NOTES ARE PROVIDED AND MULTIPLE CHOICE AND TRUE OR FALSE QUESTIONS ARE APPENDED. FLOWCHARTS ILLUSTRATE A MUNICIPAL POLICE DEPARTMENT AND AN OVERVIEW OF THE ENTIRE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, FROM INVESTIGATION AND ARREST THROUGH TO INCARCERATION AND PROBATION. (MHP)
