THE 55 CRIMINAL JUSTICE STANDARDS IDENTIFIED AS REGIONAL PRIORITIES FOR THIS NONMETROPOLITAN AREA, CONSISTING OF 15 COUNTIES IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS, ARE PRESENTED. THEIR IMPLEMENTATION IS DISCUSSED.
Abstract
STANDARDS PROPOSED BY BOTH THE NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMISSION ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE STANDARDS AND GOALS AND THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION WERE REVIEWED BY A COMMITTEE OF CITIZENS AND POLICE, COURTS, AND CORRECTIONS PROFESSIONALS. THIS EFFORT WAS PART OF A DEMONSTRATION PROJECT, THE 'DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF STANDARDS IN NONMETROPOLITAN AREAS,' DESIGNED TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEMS OF IMPLEMENTING NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE STANDARDS IN RURAL AREAS. THE FIRST PORTION OF THE REPORT DESCRIBES THE COMMITTEE PROCESS USED TO SELECT THE STANDARDS MOST APPROPRIATE FOR THIS REGION. THE SECOND PORTION PRESENTS THE 55 STANDARDS SELECTED AND IDENTIFIES RESOURCES NEEDED TO IMPLEMENT THEM. THE FOUR PRIMARY AREAS OF CONCERN ARE PERSONNEL, INTERGOVERNMENTAL COOPERATION AND PLANNING, JUVENILE JUSTICE, AND CITIZEN PARTICIPATION. PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED DURING THE STANDARDS IDENTIFICATION PROCESS ARE BRIEFLY REVIEWED. (SEE ALSO NCJ-51540.) (GLR)
