THE CRIMINAL HISTORIES OF THREE GROUPS OF NON-MEDICAL OPIATE USERS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM SHOWED A DECREASING NUMBER OF CONVICTIONS FOR THEFT OFFENSES AND AN INCREASING NUMBER OF CONVICTIONS FOR DRUG OFFENSES.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT THE PATTERN OF CRIMINALITY OF MALE NON-MEDICAL OPIATE USERS IS CLOSELY RELATED BOTH TO THE NATURE OF THE NATIONAL DRUG CONTROL LEGISLATION (THE UNITED KINGDOM SUPPLIES HEROIN TO REGISTERED USERS, WHO ARE ELIGIBLE FOR SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS) AND TO THE INDIVIDUAL CRIMINAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE USERS.
