The Elmwood Deuce Program in Santa Clara County (Calif.) is a drug abuse intervention program designed to provide repeat drunk-driving offenders the opportunity to explore the relationship between their alcohol and other drug abuse and their dysfunctional lifestyles.
Abstract
This collaborative, interagency effort serves 80 inmates in a facility that is physically separated from the main compound of the 2,500-inmate Elmwood correctional facility. Program staff and other professionals conduct daily group activities including information sessions, model 12-step meetings, individual and group problemsolving, recreation, art classes, parenting classes, academic education, a pilot acupuncture project, relaxation and meditation exercises, smoking cessation groups, and exit planning. The program aims to develop life skills including creating healthy relationships, nurturing basic health habits, practicing honesty and self-discipline, assuming responsibility for personal actions, and cooperating with others. Such a program can help these offenders if they end their denial and accept the direct link between their criminal history and the untreated addiction. 5 reference notes
