The increasing number of criminal aliens and crimes they commit require police officers to be aware of their activities, immigration laws, the role of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), and the police role in interactions with criminal aliens.
Abstract
Criminal aliens are increasingly involved in drug- related crimes and violence. The INS currently monitors several alien crime groups, including Colombian narco- terrorists, Dominican crime groups, Jamaican Posses, Chinese and Vietnamese crime gangs, Korean organized crime groups, Nigerian heroin couriers, Israeli Mafia, Russian Mafia, Rumanian criminal organizations, and the Japanese Yakuza mob. The threat of deportation is the main threat against criminal aliens. The INS must arrest the alien for deportation to occur, even if the alien has been sentenced to prison for another offense. Police officers should be careful when stopping suspects, because criminal aliens are often willing to use violence. During any criminal arrest of suspected illegal aliens, police should keep their crime potential and criminal history in mind. Finally, police officers should be aware of immigration laws and contact a local INS agent when they encounter a situation that may require their attention. Photographs
