This volume presents the agenda and materials from a 1994 seminar held in Dallas and focusing on child abuse and neglect and effective techniques for detecting, investigating, and prosecuting these cases.
Abstract
Individual presentations focused on the nature of child physical and sexual abuse and child neglect, the interrogation of suspects in child abuse cases, the role of children as eyewitnesses, the use of search warrants in child abuse investigations, opening statements in cases of child sexual abuse, methods of combating stress and burnout among professionals involved in child abuse investigations, and issues related to juvenile gangs. Additional presentations focused on child fatalities for the perspective of the pathologist, the death review team, and the investigators; the recognition and investigation of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy; child witnesses; juvenile prostitution and its investigation; and the treatment and followup care of juvenile prostitutes. Further presentations focused on cooperation between police and mental health professionals in intervening with children exposed to violence, strategies for intervention with inner-city children who witness violence.
