Data on crimes against children reported to local law enforcement agencies in Washington from January through June 1988 formed the basis of this analysis of the nature and extent of child maltreatment.
Abstract
Findings showed that the major source of risk to children in Washington comes from within the family and from other known persons; assaults by strangers make up only a small portion of what happens to children. Mothers are more often responsible for neglect-related incidence; although a surprising number of mothers were the alleged offenders in physical assaults on children. The 5,324 incidents included 1,701 incidents of physical abuse, 2,485 incidents of sexual abuse, and 1,138 cases of neglect. Physical abuse included 11 homicides, 515 aggravated assaults, and 1,168 simple assaults. Sexual assaults included incest, rape, indecent exposure, molestation, statutory rape, child prostitution, and child pornography. Tables, figures, and study instrument.
