This document presents State and local statistics on crime and arrests in West Virginia during 1996, based on data in the West Virginia Uniform Crime Reporting Program.
Abstract
The State experienced 1 index crime every 11.6 minutes, 1 violent crime every 2.3 hours, 1 murder every 5.3 days, 1 robbery every 11.9 hours, and 1 aggravated assault every 3.2 hours. It also experienced one nonviolent crime every 12.6 minutes, including 1 burglary every 52.7 minutes, 1 larceny every 18.6 minutes, and 1 motor vehicle theft every 2.7 hours. The State experienced 2,700 felony assaults, 737 robberies, 358 rapes, 69 robberies, 28,300 larcenies, 9,979 cases of breaking and entering, and 3,231 auto thefts.
