This 1989 Uniform Crime Reports for West Virginia presents statistics on Part I offenses, index crime arrests and clearance rates, the crime rate, and law enforcement employees.
Abstract
West Virginia's population in 1989 was 1,857,000, and there were 3,731 law enforcement employees (2,556 sworn officers and 1,175 civilians). There were 43,875 total index crimes (2,719 violent crimes and 41,156 nonviolent crimes). The index crime rate was 2,362.7 per 100,000 residents. A total of 22.9 percent of index crimes were cleared, and the number of arrests for index crimes was 61,994. The value of property stolen was $35,461,438, and the value of property recovered was $11,845,465 (33.4 percent). No law enforcement officers were killed, and 190 were assaulted, 31.1 percent of the assaults produced personal injury. There were 548 arson offenses that caused $11,070,587 in damage. Data on arrestees covers race, sex, and age. Data are presented on domestic violence, controlled substances, and child abuse cases. Crime figures are broken down by municipal, county, regional, and State totals.
