Abstract
The description of the criminal justice process covers investigation/arrest, complaint, release on bail, case review, presentation to the grand jury, arraignment on the indictment, pretrial proceedings, plea negotiation, pretrial intervention program, scheduling of the trial data, trial, sentencing date, the presentence investigation report, sentencing options, and appeal. The Office of Victim-Witness Advocacy works in cooperation with the County Prosecutors' Office. The services of the program respond to a diversity of needs, extending from the time immediately following the crime through the court process. Crisis and emergency assistance such as medical care, transportation, supportive counseling, home security checks, escorts, and financial aid are often needed because of crime-related trauma, losses, or experiences. Informational and logistical services are also supplied. These cover orientation to the court process, case-status information, child care, and appropriate court waiting facilities and parking. Appended glossary of terms, useful addresses and phone numbers, State and county offices of victim-witness advocacy, and sample forms
