This volume provides an overview on how victims of violent crime can apply for financial compensation from their State government and presents State-by-State descriptions of victim compensation programs and procedures.
Abstract
The volume includes information on who is eligible, who is ineligible, compensable losses, noncompensable losses, maximum awards, and how and where to apply. The text notes that in 1989, the estimated cost of violent crime to victims was more than $1.5 billion. The funds awarded by crime victim compensation programs can provide valuable assistance when a victim needs it the most. Victims usually receive financial assistance within 3-4 months from the time they file their applications. Each case is investigated separately. Glossary, addresses of resource organizations, lists of further readings, index, and appended overview of the Federal program and its legislation
