Annotation

Statistics on violence, sex crimes, robbery, burglary, motor vehicle theft, crimes inflicting damage, fraud, driving under the influence of alcohol, and drug offenses indicate a relatively steady increase in crime between 1950 and 1991.

Abstract

The number of crimes reported to the police increased from 195,000 in 1950 to nearly 1.2 million in 1991. Slightly less than 41,000 violent crimes were reported in 1991, a decrease of 1 percent from 1990. In 1991, 5,500 sexual crimes were reported to the police. The number of reported robberies during the year totaled 6,200, while 156,000 burglaries were reported. Although reported motor vehicle thefts doubled between 1980 and 1990, the 71,000 thefts recorded in 1991 represented a 7 percent decrease from 1990. The number of fraud incidents reported to the police declined by 24 percent between 1990 and 1991. Between 1980 and 1990, the number of recorded crimes inflicting damage increased by more than 50 percent. In 1991, 30,765 violations of the Narcotics Drug Act were reported to the police, 16 percent more than in 1990. Also in 1991, 26,000 drunk driving crimes were reported.
