State-by-State criminal justice data for 1992 focus on arrests, offenses, corrections, law enforcement personnel and finance, courts, and drugs and alcohol.
Abstract
Data were obtained from thousands of published and unpublished documents from government and private organizations and brought together in this comprehensive crime fact book. Data sources include the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, the American Correctional Association, the Bureau of the Census, the Bureau of Justice Statistics and Clearinghouse, the Corrections Compendium, the Drugs and Crime Data Center and Clearinghouse, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the National Center for State Courts, the National Institute of Justice, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Statistical sections are categorized under the following major categories: arrests and juvenile arrests, corrections, drugs and alcohol, finance, law enforcement, and offenses (urban/rural crime and 1988 crimes). Each data category is presented on one page that displays the data from each of the 50 States (and usually the District of Columbia) in rank order, from highest to lowest. National figures are shown at the top of each table and all sources and footnotes are on the same page. On the first page, States are ranked according to "dangerousness" based on 16 criteria. The book includes such features as table listings at the beginning of each chapter, a detailed index, a complete table of contents, and a chapter "thumb index."
