TWO-STAGE SIMULTANEOUS LEAST SQUARES REGRESSION EQUATION ESTIMATION IS USED TO DEMONSTRATE THAT PAST ANALYSIS OF THE CRIME-SANCTIONS RELATION HAS TENDED TO UNDERESTIMATE THE NEGATIVE INFLUENCE OF SANCTIONS ON CRIME.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR FORMULATES A MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR INVESTIGATING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE RATE OF REPORTED FELONY CRIME AND THE RISK OF LEGAL PUNISHMENT, AND THEN COMPARES THE RESULTS OBTAINED USING ORDINARY LAST SQUARES AND SIMULTANEOUS EQUATION ESTIMATION. A TECHNICAL APPENDIX IS INCLUDED.
