THE CRIME RESISTANCE PROGRAM OF THE FBI EDUCATES CITIZENS ON THE TOPIC OF COMMUNITY AND PERSONAL SECURITY AND INDICATES METHODS FOR REDUCING PERSONAL VULNERABILITY.
Abstract
CRIME PREVENTION IS THE PARTICIPATION IN ACTIONS THAT WILL REDUCE OR REMOVE THE RISK OF CRIME. CONVERSELY, CRIME RESISTANCE IS THE INDIVIDUAL OR COLLECTIVE RESPONSE TO VULNERABILITY TO CRIMINAL ACTS. SUCH VULNERABILITIES MAY BE REDUCED BY ACTIONS DIRECTED AT SPECIFIC VICTIMS AND AT SPECIFIC OFFENDERS. VICTIMS OF ROBBERIES MAY BE INFORMED OF BETTER AND MORE SECURE METHODS OF CARRYING VALUABLES. PUBLIC CONCERN MAY BE DIRECTED AT THE PROSECUTION OF SPECIFIC CRIMES. CRIME RESISTANCE BECOMES A MATTER OF CHANGING PUBLIC AND INDIVIDUAL ATTITUDES ON THE TOPIC OF SECURITY, RATHER THAN MERELY TRYING TO PLACE STRONGER LOCKS ON DOORS. THE MARKING OF VALUABLES WITH PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS HAS BEEN FOUND TO AID IN THE RETURN OF SUCH PROPERTY IF IT IS STOLEN. SIMILARLY, THE MODIFICATION OF POTENTIAL VICTIMS' ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE POLICE, THROUGH THE USE OF EDUCATION PROGRAMS, INCREASES THE LIKELIHOOD THAT CITIZENS WILL SEEK POLICE ASSISTANCE WHEN IT IS REQUIRED. ADDITIONAL DISCUSSION CONCERNS THE HISTORY OF THE CRIME RESISTANCE PROGRAM, THE ROLE OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND THE NEED FOR COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION IN ANY PROGRAM OF CRIME RESISTANCE OR PREVENTION.
