A 23.2-PERCENT CRIME REDUCTION RATE AT EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN CHENEY, WASHINGTON, IS ATTRIBUTED TO A COMPUTERIZED RECORD-KEEPING SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE KEY TO THE SYSTEM'S SUCCESS IS THE THREE MONTHLY COMPUTER PRINTOUTS DESIGNED TO CLASSIFY CRIME BY LOCATION, TYPE OF CRIME, AND PEOPLE NAMED IN THE CRIME REPORT. EACH OF THE THREE PRINTOUTS GIVES THE REPORT NUMBER, DATE OF REPORT, TIME OF REPORT, CRIME CODE, AND STATUS OF THE CASE. IN ADDITION, THE PRINTOUTS CONTAIN INFORMATION AS TO THE LOCATION OF EACH CRIME AND INFORMATION AS TO WHETHER SOMETHING WAS LOST, STOLEN OR DAMAGED. THIS PROGRAM, RUN BY THE OFFICE OF CAMPUS SAFETY, IS COORDINATED WITH THE REGULATION OF PARKING ON CAMPUS. THE OFFICE OF CAMPUS SAFETY PROVIDES FIRE EXTINGUISHER SERVICE AND REPAIR, PROVIDES FIRE AND SAFETY INSTRUCTION FOR DORM STUDENTS AND STAFF, CONDUCTS PARKING DECAL SALES, ASSIGNS KEYS FOR OVER 5,000 DIFFERENT DOOR LOCKS ON CAMPUS, AND SERVES AS THE VISITOR INFORMATION CENTER. THE COMPUTERIZED INFORMATION SYSTEM ENABLES CAMPUS SAFETY TO TAKE A MORE SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO CRIME PREVENTION AS IT QUICKLY HELPS THE POLICE LOCATE PROBLEM AREAS. THE SYSTEM ALSO HELPS CAMPUS SAFETY IDENTIFY PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE CRIME AS SUSPECTS, VICTIMS, WITNESSES, OR INFORMANTS. THE COMPUTERIZED RECORD-KEEPING SYSTEM IS SEEN AS THE MAJOR FORCE BEHIND IMPROVED EFFICIENCY OF THE POLICE, THE SECURITY FORCE, AND THE CLERICAL STAFF. PHOTOGRAPHS AND A SAMPLE COMPUTER PRINTOUT ILLUSTRATE THE REPORT. (MLC)
