THIS VOLUME OF A 3-PART CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (CPTED) PROGRAM MANUAL PROVIDES PLANNERS WITH DETAILED GUIDANCE FOR DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTING A CPTED PROJECT.
Abstract
THE MULTIVOLUME PROGRAM MANUAL WAS PRODUCED TO ASSIST URBAN DESIGNERS AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE PLANNERS IN DETERMINING THE APPLICABILITY AND FEASIBILITY OF THE CPTED CONCEPT TO THE SOLUTION OF CRIME OR FEAR-OF-CRIME PROBLEMS IN VARIOUS URBAN ENVIRONMENTS. THE PRIMARY GOAL OF CPTED IS TO REDUCE CRIME AND FEAR OF CRIME THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN TECHNIQUES (I.E., ACCESS CONTROL, SURVEILLANCE, ACTIVITY SUPPORT, AND MOTIVATION REINFORCEMENT). INTENDED AS A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR THE APPLICATION OF THE CPTED CONCEPT TO SPECIFIC URBAN CRIME-PREVENTION PROJECTS AT THE LOCAL LEVEL, THIS VOLUME DESCRIBES THE PROCESS FOR DETERMINING CPTED APPLICABILITY AND FEASIBILITY, REACHING POLICY DECISIONS ON PROJECT DEVELOPMENT, EFFECTING PROJECT INITIATION, OBTAINING THE DATA NECESSARY FOR ASSESSING THE NATURE AND SEVERITY OF CRIME AND FEAR OF CRIME PROBLEMS, TRANSLATING FINDINGS INTO CPTED STRATEGIES, AND IMPLEMENTING AND EVALUATING CPTED STRATEGIES. ORGANIZATIONAL CHARTS, TABLES, AND GRAPHS ARE INCLUDED. SEE ALSO NCJ 52421-52422 AND 45748-45751. (KBL)
