THIS REPORT BRIEFLY SUMMARIZES DISCUSSIONS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY SESSION OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL POLICE ORGANIZATION (INTERPOL) HELD IN PANAMA FROM OCTOBER 19 TO 26, 1978, ON A PREVIOUS CRIME PREVENTION SYMPOSIUM.
Abstract
THE SYMPOSIUM ON CRIME WAS HELD FROM MAY 30 TO JUNE 1, 1978, AND WAS ATTENDED BY 77 PARTICIPANTS FROM 40 COUNTRIES. THE REPORT DISCUSSES CRIME PREVENTION ADVISORY CENTERS WHICH PROVIDE CONSULTATION FOR BOTH THE POLICE AND THE PUBLIC AND USUALLY FOCUS ON JUVENILE DELINQUENCY AND MATERIAL SECURITY. THE REPORT ALSO COVERS SOCIAL DUTIES OF THE POLICE, MASS MEDIA CRIME PREVENTION CAMPAIGNS, SCHOOL TEACHING PROGRAMS, POLICE PARTICIPATION IN DRAFTING LAWS, AND CRIME PREVENTION PLANNING AND RESEARCH. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE SYMPOSIUM PROVIDED EVIDENCE OF POLICE INTEREST IN CRIME PREVENTION AND THAT MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN THEIR OWN SECURITY. (JLF)
