DESIGNED TO TEACH CRIME PREVENTION TO SENIOR CITIZENS, THIS TRAINING MANUAL DESCRIBES THE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT OF CRIME PREVENTION TRAINING SESSIONS FOR THE ELDERLY.
Abstract
THE MANUAL REPRESENTS 2 YEARS OF RESEARCH BY THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND ELDERLY STAFF OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF SENIOR CITIZENS DURING WHICH TRAINING FILMS, LITERATURE, AND BROCHURES ON THE SUBJECT WERE REVIEWED. TWO BASIC PRINCIPLES UNDERLIE THE TRAINING TECHNIQUES: (1) PARTICIPATORY TECHNIQUES PRODUCE BETTER RESULTS THAN TRADITIONAL LECTURE FORMATS, AND (2) A COMBINATION OF SEVERAL TECHNIQUES WILL REINFORCE THE INFORMATION LEARNED, AS WELL AS MAINTAIN THE PARTICIPANTS' INTEREST LEVEL. THE MANUAL DIVIDES THE TOPIC OF CRIME PREVENTION EDUCATION INTO FIVE DIFFERENT SUBJECT AREAS: BECOMING AWARE OF CRIME, PROTECTING YOURSELF ON THE STREET, PROTECTING YOUR PROPERTY, CONSUMER FRAUD AND CON GAMES, AND COLLECTIVE ACTION. IDEALLY, EACH TOPIC SHOULD BE COVERED IN A SEPARATE SESSION, SPACED A WEEK APART. TO FACILITATE THE USE OF A VARIETY OF TECHNIQUES TO TEACH THE SUBJECTS FIVE MODULES FOR EACH OF THE FIVE TOPICS ARE GIVEN. EACH MODULE USES A DIFFERENT TECHNIQUE: A PRESENTATION ON MYTHS AND REALITIES OF THE CRIME PROBLEM, FILM, A ROLEPLAY SESSION, A GUEST SPEAKER, AND A SMALL GROUP SESSION. EACH MODULE ALSO PROVIDES DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO USE THE TECHNIQUE INCLUDING INFORMATION ON TIME REQUIRED, GROUP SIZE, INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES, EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS. A CHART DEPICTS THE FULL RANGE OF POSSIBILITIES OF THE 25 MODULES. APPENDIXES CONTAIN ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FILMS AND BROCHURES, AND A LIST OF RESOURCES. FOOTNOTES ARE INCLUDED.
