A DISCUSSION OF THE THEORY, IMPLICATIONS, AND APPLICATIONS OF CRIME REDUCTION THROUGH THE DESIGN OF ENVIRONMENTS THAT, BY THEIR EFFECTION HUMAN BEHAVIOR, WILL PREVENT CRIME FROM OCCURRING.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR REVIEWS TRADITIONAL CRIME PREVENTION STRATEGIES AND COMMENTS ON THE FAILURE OF ALL THESE APPROACHES TO SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE CRIME. IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL APPROACH TO CRIME PREVENTION, THE FOCUS IS ON CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR, NOT THE CRIMINAL, AND ON PREVENTING BEHAVIOR CONSIDERED CRIMINAL RATHER THAN ON DEALING WITH THE CRIMINAL HIMSLEF. THE MEANS BY WHICH ENVIRONMENT MAY AFFECT HUMAN BEHAVIOR ARE DISCUSSED, AND EXAMPLES OF METHODS OF EMPLOYING THESE DESIGN FACTORS TO THE REDUCTION OF CRIME ARE PROVIDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
