IN BRITAIN, THE COMMUNITY RELATIONS BRANCH OF SCOTLAND YARD AND LONDON'S CRIME PREVENTION ORGANIZATION OF THE METROPOLITAN POLICE HAVE BOTH CONTRIBUTED GREATLY IN CRIME PREVENTION EFFORTS.
Abstract
THE COMMUNITY RELATIONS BRANCH AT NEW SCOTLAND YARD WAS CREATED IN 1968 TO MEET THE UPSURGE OF LONDON CRIME. ITS GOALS ARE TO EXPLAIN TO THE PUBLIC THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POLICE AND TO INTERPRET SOCIAL FACTS, MOVEMENTS, AND PUBLIC ATTITUDES TO THE REST OF THE POLICE FORCE. PARTICULAR SECTIONS OF THE ORGANIZATION DEAL WITH SUCH AREAS AS RACE RELATIONS, JUVENILE DELINQUENCY, POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS, AND MISSING PERSONS. PARTICULAR EFFORT IS TAKEN TO GAIN THE CONFIDENCE OF CHILDREN AND JUVENILES. IN 1967 THE FULL-TIME CRIME PREVENTION ORGANIZATION OF THE METROPOLITAN POLICE WAS FOUNDED WITH THE GOAL OF PROVIDING SECURITY ADVICE TO INDUSTRIAL CONCERNS AND PRIVATE PERSONS. THE DUTIES OF THE MEMBERS INCLUDE THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF INTEREST IN CRIME PREVENTION IN OTHER POLICE OFFICERS, THE INTERPRETATION OF CRIMINAL TRENDS AND METHODS TO COLLEAGUES, AND THE ADVISING OF THE PUBLIC ON TECHNICAL PROTECTION METHODS. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO IS IN CHARGE OF STUDYING NEW METHODS OF CRIME PREVENTION, KEEPING ABREAST OF TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS, MAINTAINING CONTACT WITH OTHER CRIME PREVENTION ORGANIZATIONS, COORDINATING CRIME PREVENTION FUNCTIONS OF ALL OTHER BRANCHES OF THE FORCE, AND TRAINING SUBDIVISION CRIME PREVENTION OFFICE. ITS ACTIVITIES IN 1974 INCLUDED THE USE OF A MOBILE CRIME PREVENTION VEHICLE, POLICE TRAINING IN CRIME PREVENTION TECHNIQUES, CRIME PREVENTION COMMITTEES AT THE HOME OFFICE, CRIME PREVENTION PANELS, AND MEDIA CAMPAIGNS. THESE EFFORTS SHOW THAT EFFECTIVE CRIME DETECTION AND CONVICTION IS THE GREATEST DETERRENT AGAINST CRIME. --IN ENGLISH AND GERMAN. (SAJ)
