The 49th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly produced debate, recommendations, and actions, based on findings of the World Ministerial Conference on Organized Transnational Crime held in Naples, Italy, in 1994.
Abstract
Conference participants identified a significant increase in the incidence and geographic distribution of organized crime and determined that organized crime has a destabilizing and corrupting influence on fundamental social, economic, and political institutions. Conference participants also stressed the need for an international cooperative approach to organized crime prevention and noted problems and dangers posed by organized transnational crime. The conference resulted in a political declaration on organized crime prevention, as well as a global action plan. In addition, the conference made recommendations on the enactment of national legislation; international cooperation at investigative, prosecutorial, and judicial levels; the prevention and control of money laundering and crime proceeds; and the establishment of an international task force. An appendix lists documents before by the World Ministerial Conference.
