Uniform Crime Reports statistics comparing crime in North Dakota with other States for 1981 demonstrate that not only does that State have one of the lowest crime rates in the United States, but it also reports a lesser amount of violent crime within that low rate.
Abstract
Tables give Index crime rates for all States from 1970 through 1981 and then rank the 50 States, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia by their 1981 crime rates. Index crime rates for six midwestern States are compared. Other tables show the total number of index crime offenses reported and the ratio of violent to property crime for all States. North Dakota is one of the three States reporting the lowest crime rates annually through the 12-year period, as well as a crime rate only slightly greater than one-half of the national crime rate. Of six States having similar populations, only South Dakota reported a lower crime rate than North Dakota in 1981. North Dakota reported only one-tenth of 1 percent of the total Index crimes in 1981.
