This report from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services provides information on the number of Index crimes and crime rates for the State for 2010.
Abstract
Highlights from this report include: for the period 2001 through 2010, the overall rate of Index crimes in New York State decreased by 21 percent, the rate of violent crimes decreased by 25 percent, and the rate of property crimes decreased by 20 percent; the largest reductions in rates were seen for motor vehicle theft and robbery; the actual number of crimes reported also fell for the period 2001 through 2010 with 108,622 fewer crimes reported in 2010 than in 2001; counties outside of New York City accounted for 58 percent of all crimes in 2010, as compared to 50 percent in 2000; between 2009 and 2010, violent crime incidents involving a firearm decreased by 4 percent; and 61 percent of murders reported outside of New York City involved a firearm. This report from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services presents preliminary data on Index crime rates for New York State for 2010. Data for the report were obtained from the State's Uniform Crime Reporting and Incident Based Reporting programs. Index offenses include the violent crimes of murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, and property crimes of burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft. Information is presented on crime rates for 2010, changes in crime rates for the period 2001 through 2010, statewide crime trends for 2009 and 2010; percentage change in crime by region for 2009 and 2010, and trends in violent crimes by firearms for the period 2001 through 2010.
