This report presents data on crimes known to New Jersey law enforcement agencies in 1999, as reported by all law enforcement agencies in the State in accordance with the standards and procedures of the Uniform Crime Reports; arrest data are also provided.
Abstract
Murder decreased 11 percent from the previous year, from 321 in 1998 to 287 in 1999. There were 1,412 rapes in 1999 compared with 1,623 in 1998, a 13-percent decrease. Robbery decreased 6 percent, from 15,115 in 1998 to 14,251 in 1999. There were 17,629 aggravated assaults in 1999 compared with 18,663 in 1998, a 6-percent decrease. Burglary decreased 13 percent, from 54,491 in 1998 to 47,135 in 1999; and larceny-theft declined from 171,267 in 1998 to 161,363 in 1999, a 6-percent decrease. Motor vehicle theft was the only offense to undergo an increase, from 35,158 in 1998 to 35,395 in 1999, a 1-percent increase. The total number of crimes reported in 1999 was 277,472, a 6-percent decrease from the 296,638 in 1998. Arrest data are presented by age group. The total number of arrests for persons under the age of 18 was 15,358 for Index offenses; for those over age 18, the number of arrests for Index offenses was 41,857. Data are provided separately for "bias incidents" and domestic violence incidents. Data are also provided on police employees and law enforcement officers killed and assaulted.
