Abstract
The crime data presented involve offenses established by police investigation. A total of 301,761 Index Offenses were reported to Maryland law enforcement agencies during calendar year 1991. This was an increase of 8.2 percent compared to the 1990 data (278,779 Crime Index Offenses). Violent crimes accounted for 15 percent of the total Crime Index for 1991; in 1990, violent crimes accounted for 16 percent of the total Crime Index. The crime rate for the State was 6,209.1 victims for every 100,000 population in 1991, a 6.5-percent increase in the crime rate from 1990. Law enforcement agencies cleared 22 percent of all Index Offenses reported to them in 1991, compared to 23 percent in 1990. Violent crime showed a 45-percent clearance rate in 1991, compared to 47 percent in 1990. Data are provided on each of the Crime Index offenses: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, breaking or entering, larceny, motor vehicle theft, arson, and battered spouse. Data are reported by region, county, and agency. Arrest data are broken down by gender, race, and age. Law enforcement employee data address the number of officers killed and assaulted, as well as employee data and rates. Extensive tabular data
